News briefs: Learn more about York County’s $89.7M bond referendum Oct. 13 in Lake Wylie

County bond meeting Oct. 13

York County Councilman Bruce Henderson will join other public officials for a community meeting in Lake Wylie to discuss the Nov. 3 county referendum and its local impacts.

The meeting is set for 7 p.m. Oct. 13 at Oakridge Middle School. Department heads and experts from the groups that would receive funding from the bond will explain the need for items.

On Nov. 3, county voters will be asked to approve up to $89.7 million in bond money for new buildings or renovations for the York County Sheriff’s Office, magistrates in Fort Mill and Clover, a recycling center, family court and other items.

CHS football game free for military

Military Appreciation Night is Oct. 9 at the Clover High School football game at Memorial Stadium.

Admission is free for active military members and veterans with ID or DD 214.

Also, CHS and River Hills/Lake Wylie Lions Club is collecting used golf balls to ship to soldiers overseas. Collection bins will be at the game and at the high school main office through Oct. 9.

York County lieutenant graduates FBI academy

A York County sheriff’s lieutenant recently graduated from the FBI National Academy.

Lt. Mike Ligon completed the National Academy program in Quantico, Va., and graduated this month with a class of 250 officers, according to a statement from the York County Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff’s spokesman Trent Faris said Ligon has been with the agency 17 years, and is the fifth York County officer to complete the program.

Officers selected for the program have, on average, 19 years of law enforcement experience, Faris said, and graduates usually return to their agencies to serve in executive-level position.

Dance classes start Oct. 5

St John’s United Methodist Church, 321 S. Oakland Ave., will begin new dances classes.

Beginner Waltz is 7:30-8:30 p.m. Nov. 2, 9 and 16. Cost is $15 a person for the three sessions.

Proceeds go to the youth of the church. No partner needed, but registration is required. Call 803-372-1315.

Water rate hearings set

Carolina Water Service customers in York County can weigh in on the proposed water and sewer rate at public hearings in Clover and Rock Hill.

The state Public Service Commission is holding a hearing at 6 p.m. Oct. 15 at First Baptist Church in Rock Hill, 481 Hood Center Drive. Another hearing is scheduled at 6 p.m. Oct. 29 at Clover School District Auditorium, 1625 Highway 55 E.

Anyone wanting to testify in the rate case can do so at the hearings. Speakers get three minutes, with all testimony given under oath. Residents testifying can expect the attention of commissioners, but the group will not answer questions.

Carolina Water filed June 20 for a rate increase throughout its South Carolina service areas. The average water and sewer increases are about 20 percent.

Tickets on sale for garden’s music festival

Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden’s first Lost Hollow Music Fest will be held Oct. 17-18 featuring six performances by old time, bluegrass and Americana bands including Grammy winner David Holt and Nashville mandolin prodigy Sierra Hull.

The festival kicks off at 10 a.m. Oct. 17 with Riverbend, David Childers & the Serpents at noon, and headliner Sierra Hull at 2 p.m. On Oct. 18, the event starts at noon with Darin & Brooke Aldridge, followed by Underhill Rose at 2 p.m., and headliner David Holt & Josh Goforth at 4 p.m.
