Army music
United States Army Field Band and Soldiers’ Chorus performing. The Concert Band and Soldiers’ Chorus are the oldest and largest of the U. S. Army Field Band’s performing components. The 65-member Concert Band and 29-member Soldiers’ Chorus perform a program from orchestral masterworks and operatic arias, to Sousa marches, jazz classics and Broadway musicals. Civil War re-enactment
Two-day Civil War re-enactment Oct. 24-25 includes cannon-firing demonstrations, historic archery demonstrations, camp life activities, presentations and children’s military drills. In addition to two battle re-enactments at 2 p.m. each day, historical interpreters will tell the story of the Bratton family. Stan Clardy will present his one-man play “Soldiers in Gray” at 3 p.m. Saturday on the back porch of Hightower Hall. Period reproduction items and foods will be available for purchase. Wear a not-too-scary costume and kick-off the day in a ghostly parade. Experience paranormal lighting, contorting mirrors and visit the Hall of Darkness. Solve the mystery of missing bones and uncover the truth about bats, toads, spiders and newts. Assist Winthrop University’s Student Affiliates of the American Chemical Society with supernatural experiments. The Settlemyre Planetarium will have a special “Scare-olina Skies” presentation at 2 p.m. featuring real objects scarier than science fiction – black holes and eclipsing binary stars. Curtin Farms Fest will feature artisans, local food and live music. Stroll the 100-year-old farm to see peacocks, alpacas and other farm animals, as well as equipment. CROP Walk
Eastern York County CROP Walk features a 3.5-mile route for this community hunger appeal of Church World Service. The Rev. Ricky Howell is organizer and a United Methodist campus minister with the Winthrop Wesley Foundation. Participants gather on the Dinkins Hall lawn at Winthrop University. This year’s event also features CanStruction, a competition encouraging groups to create sculptures out of canned food items. Participants in the CROP Walk will view the creations and vote on their favorite. Canned food items will be donated to local food pantries. Free, but participants are encouraged to bring at least one canned food item. Registration begins at 2 p.m. 803-327-5640.
