Letters to the editor: Traffic issues at Lake Wylie; infrastructure can’t support developments; thanks for park support

Traffic suggestions brought to you by a resident

This morning traffic on 49 was at a dead stop again. Just as I was reading about another 449 home development plan in Lake Wylie.

Since no one in York County government seems to care, I would like to make some suggestions:

▪ All developers, real estate agents and rental agents must include in their marketing material the fact that the average commute to uptown Charlotte is at least 1 and ½ hours from Lake Wylie. If an accident occurs then that time increases to 2 to 3 hours. Not that it is only 25 miles away.

▪ The South Carolina department of transportation should immediately install signs along the road that state, “This traffic jam brought to you by the York County Council.” Then install the member’s names on a monument near the Buster Boyd Bridge.

▪ The emergency alert system immediately sounding the siren upon an accident happening on Routes 49, 574 or 557 during rush hour. This would allow residents to drive 15-20 miles out of their way to get to work, which would still be quicker than waiting for the accident to clear.

▪ Have the York County Sheriff station at least one deputy and possibly more in the suicide lane of route 49 during rush hour for faster response times to the accidents that will happen.

▪ Have York County Public Works station multiple tow trucks along with the sheriff deputies to allow for quick clearing of the afore mentioned accidents.

▪ Put out for bids for a new ferry service across the Catawba River.

▪ Install a helipad and helicopter in Lake Wylie to allow for emergency services to reach residents during a typical gridlock rush hour.

▪ Adjust school hour start times to begin after 9 AM and end times after 6 PM.

▪ Have the North Carolina – South Carolina state line redrawn to move Lake Wylie into North Carolina. They can’t do any worse than we have it now.

Infrastructure can’t support more development

An open letter to York County commissioners:

Having been in the real estate and developing business for most of my life and having owned property on Lake Wylie since 2004, I have watched a wonderful little lakeside community develop into a community with insane traffic congestion, yet York County continues to approve new subdivisions or other areas where many homes are allowed to be built.

My question is have any of you ever spent two hours in the morning or two hours in the evening trying to drive out of or back into Lake Wylie? The traffic is horrible, and no one can state that there is not an extremely severe traffic problem in and around Lake Wylie.

I shouldn’t have to, but I will point out to you the infrastructure of roads cannot, and let me repeat, cannot handle even the past approved new homes, and you also need to take into consideration the large development starting on the Stowe property when you consider the traffic issues in and around Lake Wylie.

I will also point out the future four-lane of Highway 274 and the three-lane of Pole Branch fall into the category of too little, too late.

In closing, I ask each of you consider what your approvals are doing to the future of the wonderful community of Lake Wylie and also consider the possible endangerment your approvals are creating to those attempting to travel during the rush hours, as you continue to approve new homes and developments without the infrastructure to support the same.

James R. Wells, Lake Wylie

Thanks for continued park support

In view of the recent proceedings of what has been happening in Lake Wylie, York County Sports Complex planners want to say thank you to local businesses for their support this summer providing petition locations.

I also want to invite residents to come out to York County Council meetings Nov. 2, Nov. 16, Dec. 7 and Dec. 21 at 6 p.m. at Agricultural Building, 6 S. Congress St., York.

It seems that Lake Wylie is at a crossroads on many issues including recreation tax, district overlay and the park. Now, more than ever, we need the community to pull together to support our efforts at these meetings.

Church, civic groups and neighborhoods that would like to join our efforts can email YCsportsComplex@gmail.com.
