Sink or science
As part of Palisades Episcopal School’s eighth grade students’ studies on buoyancy, density, flotation and Archimedes’ Principle, they designed and built boats out of corrugated board and duct tape.
After watching the MIT cardboard boat race, the students went to work calculating mass, volume and density to construct their boats. On the day of the PES Regatta, the students paddled their boats between docks on Lake Wylie.
The fastest boat went to Andrew DeWeese of Lake Wylie and Sam Gilbert of Steele Creek. Most creative design was Alex Owings of Lake Wylie. Best theme was Brandon Hock and Nathan Hughes, both of Lake Wylie, and Eliod Sium of Steele Creek.
