Column: HSLC saving one animal at a time

Mary Reimers is president of the Humane Society of Lancaster County. She has been trying to help solve animal abuse and neglect for a long time.

As I spoke to her, I could hear the frustration in her voice. They need a facility of their own with a surgical and training area. Their facility would house adoptable pets so that they can do basic training and also have an affordable spay and neuter center in Lancaster County.

We must slow down this senseless killing of unwanted pets. Every day they see pregnant animals set out on the country roads to fend for themselves or dropped off at the animal shelter, where they are euthanized because of the small size of the shelter and the lack of dog runs.

The HSLC has a wish list:

▪ Money

▪ Pet food (dog, cat and rabbit)

▪ Collars (they prefer nylon quick slip chokers that are hard to back out of)

▪ Blankets and crates and cages

▪ Gift cards

▪  A foster home coordinator

▪  A rescue coordinator

But most of all they need help from Lancaster City Council and Lancaster County Council members to help them conquer this growing problem of unwanted pets before it gets worst.

If you need some pet food to get you through to payday, don’t let your animals go hungry. Call 803-285-5683 and leave a message about your pets so they know how much food you may need for about a week.

Donations for pet food can be dropped off at Tractor Supply in Lancaster. You can also call the hotline at 803-285-5683 or email info@savelancasterscpets.org to make arrangements.
