York County mounted patrol tops in nation
York County Sheriff’s Mounted Patrol won several awards at the Oct. 13-16 North America Police Equestrian Championships at Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, Ky.
Deputies Mark McCarter and Jamie Sandifer with their horses, Cochise and Barney, competed against 44 officer and horse teams from New York, Massachusetts, Delaware, Ohio, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Michigan and teams from the U.S. National Park Service and Canada.
McCarter won first place in Law Enforcement Officer obstacle and overall winner of the William D. McCarthy Memorial Trophy, the most coveted prize of the tournament. McCarter also won first place in LEO Obstacle and LEO Expert Equitation Combined, and winner of the Brigadier Memorial Trophy and third place in Law Enforcement Officer Expert Equitation. Equitation is the art or practice of horse riding or horsemanship.
Sandifer won third place in Western Equitation and fifth place in Law Enforcement Officer obstacle course.
Together, McCarter and Sandifer won first place in the two-man team event challenge. Both Deputies teamed up with Jim Barnes from the National Park Service and took fifth place in the three-man team obstacle course.
Established in 2010, the York County Sheriff’s Office Mounted Patrol’s mission is for search and rescue, crowd control and patrolling parking lots during festivals and other large events. The Sheriff’s Posse is made up of five deputies and their personal horses.

Water rate hearing Oct. 29 in Clover
Carolina Water Service customers in York County can weigh in on the proposed water and sewer rate at public hearings in Clover.
The state Public Service Commission will hold a hearing at 6 p.m. Oct. 29 at Clover School District Auditorium, 1625 Highway 55 E.
Anyone wanting to testify in the rate case can do so at the hearings. Speakers get three minutes, with all testimony given under oath. Residents testifying can expect the attention of commissioners, but the group will not answer questions.
Carolina Water filed June 20 for a rate increase throughout its South Carolina service areas. The average water and sewer increases are about 20 percent.

CBCC will host its 11th annual Puppies for Patients program. Donors who give blood in November and December may sign a gift tag to be attached to a stuffed toy puppy, and delivered by CBCC to children in area hospitals and care facilities during the holidays.

Fall Frolic runs through Nov. 1
Anne Springs Close Greenway offers Fall Frolic through Nov. 1 with horse rides and hay bale mazes, a 4-acre corn maze and pumpkin patch.
Other activities include wagon rides, farm animals, pedal carts, face painting and kayaking.
Cost is $10 per person for greenway members and $12 for nonmembers. Food and beverages will be available for purchase.

Veterans group meets in Lake Wylie
The Point Man International Ministries group meets the second and fourth Tuesday of the month at The Journey church.
Point Man is a veteran-to-veteran ministry with a primary service to offer spiritual healing from PTSD. Point Man also is involved in group meetings, hospital visits, conferences, supplying speakers for churches and veteran groups, welcome home projects and community support.
The organization, which includes more than 200 local outposts, reaches spiritually and emotionally wounded veterans.
The local group will meet the second and fourth Tuesday of the month.
