CHS students collect golf balls for Lions’ project

During a recent Friday night Clover High School game, there were more than footballs on Memorial Stadium field. There were golf balls there, too.

Clover High School’s Air Force Junior ROTC and the LEO club (young Lions) members collected 300 golf balls for the River Hills/Lake Wylie Lions Club’s Bunkers for Baghdad project.

Lion Len Fleet spearheads the project, which supplies used golf balls to U.S. military troops abroad and at home. Last year, more than 8,000 balls were donated.

“I can’t thank Clover High Principal Rod Ruth enough for helping us kickstart our second year of collecting,” Fleet said. “It is appropriate the school was celebrating Military Appreciation Night that Friday evening.”

Lions support flood victims

The River Hills/Lake Wylie Lions Club jumped in to help Columbia flood victims.

Lions Vice President Bessie Meeks hit the road with a U-Haul provided by Larry Timbs Jr. with 150 pounds of provisions donated by Lions members at the club’s monthly breakfast meeting, or purchased through Lions President Len Fleet’s discretionary fund.

The Lions support 35 organizations in the area, “but when special needs arise, the Lions serve those, too,” Fleet said.
