School notes: Clover High Drama Club wins best zombie scene

CHS Drama Club wins best zombie scene

The Clover High School Drama Club won first place for best zombie scene on the course in the Old Town Zombie Fun Run 5K Oct. 24 in Rock Hill.

They were judged by the cast of “The Walking Dead” television show.

Along with the award, the group won $100 for use in the drama club for the future. Drama Club faculty adviser is Rob Addison.

OMS names Kelly staff of month

Taylor Kelly, a seventh grade math and science teacher, has been selected as the October Staff Member of the Month at Oakridge Middle School.

Kelly was born in Mauldin and grew up in Columbia. She attended Spring Valley High School, where she lettered in golf for four years. She then attended Winthrop University, where she earned an undergraduate degree in middle level math and science education. This is her first year at OMS and in teaching.

The award is sponsored by Family Trust Credit Union.

CHS FBLA club visits hospital children

Clover High School Future Business Leaders of America Club made its annual trip to Greenville to visit the Shriners Hospital for Children.

They spent time building bears at Build-A-Bear for the hospital patients.

District rezoning meetings set

The Clover School District will hold several rezoning information meetings.

Meetings start at 7 p.m. The dates and locations are as follows:

▪ Nov. 12, Oakridge Middle School

▪ Nov. 30, Crowders Creek Elementary School

Class of ’85 reunion Nov. 7

The Clover High School class of 1985 is having a 30th reunion at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 7 at T-Bones on the Lake in Lake Wylie.

Veterans invited to breakfast

Clover High School invites veterans to Veterans Day Breakfast and Program 7:30-8:30 a.m. Nov. 10 at the school’s main cafeteria.

The event is hosted by Air Force Junior ROTC and Interact Club. U.S. Rep. Mick Mulvaney is the guest speaker.

Flagpole dedication Nov. 10 at Pine Grove Christian Academy

A new flagpole will be dedicated at Pine Grove Christian Academy, 5415 Highway 557, at 9:30 a.m. Nov. 10.

The dedication is being held as a celebration of Veterans Day and will honor three WWII veterans from The Journey Church. Other guests include Rep. Mick Mulvaney, S.C. Rep. Ralph Norman and a representative from the York County Sheriff’s office. All veterans are invited.

During the dedication, Pine Grove students will raise a flag – provided by Mulvaney – that has flown over the U.S. Capitol building.

Before the ceremony, Clover High School JROTC will share the history of the flag, and proper ways to handle and display the flag, as well as color guard.

The flagpole from Conder Flag Co. in Charlotte was partly funded through a church yard sale. Other contributors include Lowe’s Home Improvement in Lake Wylie providing pavers and other materials.

Enter parade by Nov. 23

The 20th annual Lake Wylie Elementary School’s Winter Parade is at 11 a.m. Dec. 12.

The theme is Board Games and Apps. Each class, school or organization interprets the theme by dressing in costume and decorating a float. Grand marshal is Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools Superintendent Ann Clark.

The parade begins at Lake Wylie Elementary School and winds through The Crossings neighborhood (Moss Road) and ends at Good Shepherd Church.

Participation is free, but registration is required by Nov. 23. Registration forms are at http://tinyurl.com/no7ldzv.

To avoid duplicating floats and costumes, each business, organization or school should enter a float description at http://tinyurl.com/qg9pvo6.

Floats may be created using a truck, trailer or even a boat. Students must be accompanied by adults on the float or walking next to the float. Businesses are welcome to advertise in the parade. Parade participants will be allowed to toss out candy to spectators.

Hold blood drive for scholarship

The Community Blood Center of the Carolinas and American Red Cross offer high school and college students a chance to win college scholarship money.

▪ CBCC: To qualify for a Holiday Heroes scholarship, students must host a blood drive Nov. 21-30 or Dec. 19-Jan. 9. CBCC will award a $1,000 college scholarship to the student who collects the most units. Call 704-972-4727 for information.

▪ Red Cross: Register through Nov. 15 to host drives Dec. 15-Jan. 15 to be eligible to win a scholarship of up to $2,500. Six scholarships will be awarded to students who host a blood drive collecting 25 blood donations or more.
