A new T.J. Maxx, Five Below, salon, restaurant and office space are the newest additions in Steele Creek.

All of the projects are under construction near the N.C. 49 and 160 intersection. Tim Arnold, site foreman with Myers & Chapman, said his project between Publix and Goodwill in Steele Creek Crossing will include a T.J. Maxx, Five Below, salon and restaurant.

Arnold had a muddy work site this week, but a drier winter could lead to openings early next year.

“It’ll probably be the spring of next year, maybe mid-March, April,” he said.

County records for the new construction at 12740 S. Tryon St. confirm the incoming tenants. Brittany Farrell, spokeswoman for T.J. Maxx, wouldn’t confirm the new store.

“T.J.Maxx has not announced a new store in the Charlotte area …It is our practice not to announce store openings until close to an intended opening date,” she said.

T.J. Maxx has more than 1,000 stores nationwide. The retailer offers brand name items at less than traditional department store prices. Nearest locations to the new store are in Gastonia, Pineville and Rock Hill.

Five Below is a Philadelphia-based retailer offering, according to its website, “trend-right, extreme-value merchandise to the teen and pre-teen market.” Items range from $1 to $5. Five Below has more than 360 locations in 10 states, with the nearest in Columbia.

Information wasn’t available on what restaurant and salon will join the retailers. The new construction fills in more than 4 acres of parking lot and empty space between Publix and Goodwill.

“They’re using every inch of it,” Arnold said.

Across N.C. 49 sits the latest phase of RiverGate at the corner on N.C. 160. Office space is coming to the 11-acre site, developed by Childress Klein Properties and built by David. E. Looper & Co. of Hickory, N.C. The site was rezoned in 2012 to allow for up to 100,000 square feet of office space. Approved plans show six buildings are parking on-site, along with a private and public road extension through the property.

The new additions join a growing area that includes a new building for Starbucks, Jimmy John’s and mattress store under construction at 13121 S. Tryon St., between a new Taco Bell and CMC-Steele Creek.
