Column: Do you remember?

1995

▪ A 3-acre tract in downtown Fort Mill was under consideration as a possible site for a new Fort Mill library.

▪ Two Chuck Fling field goals and a 78-yard touchdown run by freshman Anquan Williams gave Fort Mill a 12-2 victory over the Broome High School Centurions and into the next round of the state playoffs.

▪  The Rev. David L. Kemp was named pastor of the Fort Mill Church of God, succeeding the late Doug Morgan. Kemp was the church’s youth pastor in 1979.

▪ The New Yorker, a Main Street restaurant owned by Joe Randazzo, re-opened. The eatery offered steaks, seafood, burgers and sandwiches.

1975

▪ Lunsford McFadden, who ran unopposed, was re-elected mayor of Fort Mill with 478 votes. All other incumbents were also re-elected.

▪ The Yellow Jackets football team clinched a playoff spot with a 14-12 win over the Blacksburg Wildcats. Donald Pittman and Jody Stegall scored touchdowns for Fort Mill.

▪ The newly organized Riverview Volunteer Fire Department boasted York County’s oldest fireman. Charlie Hope, affectionately known as “Mr. Charlie,” was 84.

▪ Bids for a Fort Mill project which would increase the capacity of water distribution lines, came in over budget.

1955

▪ Mayor Luther G. Patterson won re-election as mayor of Fort Mill by a 504-146 margin over R. E. Porter.

▪ Fort Mill’s Yellow Jackets claimed their only win of the season, 26-0 over the Lewisville Lions in the season finale.

1935

▪ Martin Drug Co., the Rexall store, at 213 Main St., was running a 1 cent sale. One could purchase two items for the price of one, plus 1 cent.

▪ Fort Mill High School’s football team ended its season long losing streak by defeating Chester’s “B” team 7-0. A pass from Patterson to Nims accounted for the game’s only touchdown.

1915

▪ Fort Mill complied with the requirements of the Fireman’s Fund Act and was entitled to 1 percent of fire insurance premiums within the town limits.

▪ Round trip fare via Southern Railway to the Panama-Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco was $82.90.
