Rain delays Nellie’s Southern Kitchen opening

Nellie’s Southern Kitchen’s opening will be delayed to first quarter 2016 due to above-average rainfall.

“We’re disappointed that we won’t be open for the holiday season, but we’re insistent on getting the details right,” said Kevin Jonas Sr., entrepreneur, musician and father of the pop trio bearing the family name. “We can’t overcome the weather, and we refuse to take shortcuts in our renovation of this beautiful building.”

About 150 people auditioned recently to be part of the staff, which will include musicians, singers and performers. Nellie’s plans to hire 75 to 100 staff.

The menu, developed by executive chef Ben Sholiton and some Jonas family recipes, includes biscuits and gravy, fried chicken, meatloaf, chicken and dumplings and apple hand pies.

Nellie’s Southern Kitchen will serve lunch and dinner in a 10,000-square-foot space. Jonas’ sister Joy Auten will serve as managing director, and cousin Danielle Davison Jonas will serve as operations manager. The restaurant, named for Jonas’ late grandmother, is at 36 N. Main St. in Belmont.
