Letters to the editor: Kudos councilmen Henderson; Sen. Peeler on track

Kudos councilmen Henderson

In response to your editorial “The state should welcome refugees,” I would like to express thanks to and support for Bruce Henderson for introducing his resolution regarding banning refugees from being settled in South Carolina until they are thoroughly vetted. This is simply common sense. The “editorial board”, whoever they may be, apparently believe they speak for the majority, as do the other members of the county council. They don’t appear to be interested in a public debate on the subject. Could it be that they’re on the wrong side of the issue and are afraid they might find out? It sounds as though they are content to let our disaffected, disconnected Federal government and the bureaucrats at the UN decide this issue with no input from those who will feel the greatest effect if the plan goes badly.

If this is indeed a “global humanitarian crisis” as your board contends, perhaps it would be prudent to examine some of the causes of that crisis. Our illustrious president drew his famous “red line” and then did nothing when it was crossed. He has been telling Mr. Assad he has to go for six years, while doing nothing to bring that to pass. It now appears Mr. Assad will be in power long after Mr. Obama is writing his memoirs, yet your board suggests that we should trust the President on this one as well. Not for me, thanks. I am all for helping those who need it, but in the words of an earlier President, “Trust, but verify”.

Thank you, Bruce, for having the guts to call for a public referendum on this issue, and for not bowing and scraping to those who would have us shut up and eat our peas.

Sen. Peeler on track

Thank God for State Senate Majority Leader Harvey Peeler (R-Dist. 14). On November 16th, Senator Peeler hand-delivered a letter to Governor Nikki Haley exposing her duplicity regarding Obama’s refugee program. “You are on record supporting this refugee program,” Peeler wrote. “I implore you to cancel the agreement you and the Department of Social Services have made with third-party groups to provide shelter to potential terrorists.”

In her predictably hypocritical fashion, Nikki Haley has since written Obama, petitioning him to slow approval of “Syrian,” and not international, refugees. Everyone knows that ISIS supporters come from many Muslim countries, not just Syria. More familiar with the nature of the crisis and more proactive solutions, Senator Peeler should run for governor.
