Oakridge Middle School basketball season starts off with wins

Nov. 30

▪ The eighth grade Oakridge Middle School boys’ basketball team won its first game of the season Nov. 30 against York 29-27.

The score was close throughout – tied at halftime and entering the final period. Oakridge had just scored to tie the game at 27 with 30 seconds left in the fourth quarter when York called a timeout to set up their final play. Their plan was to stall and hold the ball for one final shot to either win the game, or at worst, head into overtime. A Cougar passed the ball near the top of the 3-point line, when Oakridge’s Carson Onoszko jumped the pass and took it in for the game winning layup with seconds remaining. York tried to get the ball back down the court, but the Golden Eagles played tough defense, and they didn’t allow the Cougars to get a good look at the basket.

Scoring for Oakridge: Derrick Karsch, 10 points; Blackmon Huckabee, 8 points; Drew Moore, 4 points; Evan Enix, 3 points; Garrett Hawkins and Carson Onoszko, 2 points each.

▪ The eighth grade girls’ basketball team defeated York 26-14. The team was led in scoring by Ali Glenn with 9 points, Kristen Cole with 7 points, and Sara-Kate Dixon with 6. Caroline Ringler and Morgan Osborne rounded out the scoring with 2 each. Glenn paced the team with 11 rebounds.

▪ The seventh grade OMS girls’ basketball team beat the York Cougars 34-4. The game started slowly, but the defense created 31 steals allowing only 1 made field goal. All 11 players contributed in the win. .

Grace Griffith, 6 rebounds, 1 block, 1 assist, 1 steal; Bella Huston, 2 rebounds, 1 assist, 3 steals; Miranda Parham, 1 rebound, 1 steal; Autumn Huskey, 1 rebound, 1 block, 2 assists, 3 steals; Alexa Smith, 1 rebound, 2 assists, 2 steals; Aylesha Wade, 6 rebounds, 2 assists, 10 steals; Christina Jones, 4 rebounds, 1 block, 2 steals; Angel Jones, 5 rebounds, 1 steal; Skylar Walliser, 2 rebounds; Kamryn Lail, 2 rebounds, 1 steal; Rylie Zohner, 1 rebound, 2 assists, 7 steals.

▪ The seventh grade OMS boys’ team defeated York 45-21. It was a team effort with 10 players getting on the scoreboard. The team was led by Dawson Malcolm with 12 points, Josiah Turner with 7 points, Austin Stroup with 6 points, and Elliot Zinser with 5 points. Noah Caulder did a great job of distributing the ball on offense and creating havoc on defense.

Other key contributors were: Cory Adams, 2 points; Jesse Holben, 4 points; JR Good, 3 points; Baker Womack, 1 point; Champ Gillespie, 2 points.

Dec. 3

▪ The seventh grade OMS girls’ overcame a sluggish start and a poor shooting to defeat the Springfield Mustangs 36-19. The team shot just 10 percent from the field in the first half, but was able to carry a slim one-point lead into halftime due to excellent defense. In the second half, the girls converted on nearly 45 percent of their shots.

Rylie Zohner – 5 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals; Angel Jones – 4 rebounds, 1 steal; Christina Jones – 2 rebounds; Ashanti Michel – 1 rebound; Aylesha Wade – 19 rebounds, 1 assist, 6 steals; Alexa Smith – 2 rebounds; Autumn Huskey – 2 rebounds, 1 assist; Bella Huston – 3 rebounds, 1 assists; Grace Griffith – 12 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 steal.

▪ The eighth grade boys’ team lost to Springfield 30-18.

Stats: Derrick Karsch - 7 points, 4 rebounds, 4 steals; Blackmon Huckabee - 7 points, 4 rebounds, 3 steals; Brandon Malcolm - 4 points, 2 steals; Carson Onoszko - 3 steals; Garrett Hawkins - 2 assists.

▪ The seventh grade boys’ beat Springfield 40-19. The team was led by Noah Caulder with 19 points, 2 assists, and 3 steals; Damson Malcolm with 8 points, 7 rebounds, 5 steals, and 4 assists; and Elliot Zinser with 5 points 2 rebounds.

▪ The OMS eighth grade girls’ basketball team lost to Springfield 42-10 at Springfield. OMS was led in scoring by Sara-Kate Dixon with 6 points.
