Column: Do you remember?

1995

▪ The old Majestic Theatre building on Confederate Street, a Fort Mill movie house between 1939 and 1949, was demolished.

▪ Senior football players from Fort Mill High School spent the weekend in New Orleans, where they attended the Saints-Packers game. Former Yellow Jacket and current Saints player Ernest Dixon supplied the tickets.

▪ A plan by York County to reduce Fort Mill’s water and sewer area in rural Fort Mill Township could limit future annexation efforts.

▪ Parents of Gold Hill Elementary School students volunteered to raise money for portable classrooms to avoid their children’s move to another school.

1975

▪ The Fort Mill Yellow Jackets’ run at a state football championship ended with a 21-16 loss at Woodruff. A controversial call by one official aided the Wolverines’ win.

▪ After 20 years of one-way traffic, two-way traffic resumed on Monroe White Street. The closure of Carothers Elementary School prompted the change.

▪ Winners of the Optimist Club’s outstanding Student award for 1975 were Ziza Smith and William Ward.

▪ Sisk Memorial Baptist Church recently dedicated its new fellowship-office complex.

1955

▪ Coach Pete Reynolds announced that Billy Wilson and Johnny Meyers were named captains of the 1955 Yellow Jacket football team.

▪ A giant, lighted Christmas tree, at the top of Main Street, would replace the colored lights on Main Street this year.

1935

▪ J.P. Bailes resigned as a teacher at Indian Land High School and accepted a position with the government Soil and Erosion Work Program in York County.

▪ Christmas carols were sung from the steps of the graded school auditorium by students of the local schools.

1915

▪ Peter Karas, well known Rock Hill restauranteur, completed arrangements for a restaurant and fruit and candy store on Fort Mill’s Main Street.

▪ Community Day was a success as many men and women helped renovate the school building and improve the grounds.
