Palisades women bring cheer to Holy Angels
Palisades Women’s Club volunteered Nov. 17 at Holy Angels in Belmont, N.C, decorating and lighting the many Christmas trees in the residential building and on the grounds.
The club also collected gifts for Bright Blessings during its annual Christmas Party Dec. 2.
The club is open to women who live in the Palisades. It is a service and social oriented organization. Among the organizations supported are Dress for Success, Loaves and Fishes, Holy Angels School, the Sandbox, Hospitality House and Urban Ministry of Charlotte.

GOP Women’s Club installs officers
The Clover-Lake Wylie Republican Women’s Club installed new officers at the Nov. 20 annual champagne tea membership at the home of Peggy Upchurch and Don Long.
New officers are Peggy Upchurch, President; Barbara Haba, 1st vice president - programs; Jamie Henrickson, 2nd vice president - membership; Pam Cullen, 3rd vice president -legislative liaison; Gloria Hein, secretary; and Margarett Blackwell, treasurer. They were sworn in by S.C. Sen. Katrina Shealy (R- Lexington).
Annual dues cost $25. Associate membership for men is $10.
Pancake breakfast with Father Christmas Dec. 12
The River Hills/Lake Wylie Lions Club’s annual pancake breakfast with Father Christmas is 8:30-11 a.m. Dec. 12 at Camp Thunderbird.
In additions to photos with Father Christmas, there will be a bounce house, cookie decorating, face painting, free eye exams, and balloon twisting by magician Adrian Gagnon. The York County Sheriff’s Department Mounted Patrol and Bethel Volunteer Fire Department will be there, along with S.C. Highway Patrol’s Rollover Simulator.
Admission costs $8 and only 400 tickets will be sold. Advance tickets are available at the Lions Christmas tree lot, River Hills Association office, Bagel Boat or call 803-371-8083 or 803-701-7388. Proceeds from the event go to Lions Charities.
The Lions will hold these other projects:
▪ The club’s Christmas Tree sales of Fraser firs are underway at the entrance to Camp Thunderbird. Tree sizes range from 5 to 12 feet. Prices start at $35. Delivery is free in the local area. Wreaths and garlands also are for sale. Proceeds go the Lions Club Charities.
▪ Foundation gifts: The Lions Community Foundation has launched its annual fundraising campaign on behalf of the 35 area and statewide charities that count on the Lions for assistance. Gifts donated to the foundation are invested with other gifts, and only the income earned from those investments is used to support the charities. As a result individuals and organizations who support the foundation are creating a legacy of giving that will last as long as the foundation exists. Since its inception in 2008, foundation investments have distributed more than $58,000 to aid such as River Hills/Lake Wylie EMS, Lions Sight and Hearing Program, Bethel Volunteer Fire Department, Clover Area Assistance Center, Clover High scholarships and Hospice. Ways of gifting include cash, IRAs, 401Ks, marketable securities, wills, living trusts, annuities, life insurance and retirement plans. For more information, call 803-831-0911.
Women’s club meeting Dec. 16
The River Hills Women’s Club will meet Dec. 16 for a luncheon at River Hills Country Club. The Clover High School Choraliers led by Jay Forest will perform.
Social hour is 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. with an open cash bar. The Choraliers will sing at 12:30 p.m. Lunch will be served at 1 p.m.

Instead of a luncheon in January the club will have Ladies Night Out Open House 5-8 p.m. Jan. 14 at the club. Hors d’oeuvres are included in the event price of $20. Cash bar and interest tables will be available. Register by emailing rhwcmembership@gmail.com.
Registration opens for Joy of Gardening
Early-bird registration is open for the 11th annual Joy of Gardening Symposium on Feb. 27 at Baxter Hood Center.
The keynote speaker is Norman Winter, director of the University of Georgia’s Coastal Georgia Botanical Gardens in Savannah, Ga. A nationally syndicated columnist, Winter will discuss “Hot New Plants and Captivating Combinations.” He also will lead one of six break-out sessions, covering topics ranging from attracting pollinators to succulent gardens. Paula Gross, assistant director of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte Botanical Gardens, will give the closing program.
Admission to the symposium, sponsored by the Master Gardeners of York County, also includes lunch, vendors offering garden-related products and door prizes.
The early registration fee, which includes lunch, is $50. After Dec. 31, the cost will be $60.
