Bethel teacher honored in state reading contest

Joni Levesque, fourth grade math teacher at Bethel Elementary School, was one of several teachers honored through the statewide Read Your Way to the Big Game contest. Bethel and Bethany elementary schools also received honors.

The reading contest this fall was open to public primary, elementary and middle schools in South Carolina. Two students won tickets to the Nov. 28 University of South Carolina/Clemson University football game, and two schools won $2,000 each for their libraries.

Levesque was one of five teachers to win $500 through the contest. Bethel and Bethany ranked among 27 schools where at least 70 percent of students participated. Students were required to read six books each.

“The students and staff of the participating schools really outdid themselves,” said David Whittemore, chairman of the South Carolina Education Oversight Committee. “We had over 76,000 entries and that’s nearly half a million books read.”
