Letters to the editor: Driver almost killed a boy; don’t blame Lake Wylie chamber for growth issues
You almost killed a boy
His name is Cody, he’s 11 years old, and yesterday you almost killed him.
You know who you are.
I drive a school bus for Clover school district and yesterday morning you ran the stop sign. You were playing with your phone and never saw the flashing red lights until I blew the horn at you. Then you slammed on your brakes, well past the big, bright, flashing STOP sign.
Cody is alive today because he had been taught to wait for the bus driver to wave him across the road. Had he not waited, I and his mother would have had to witness that little boy being thrown through the air after you hit him.
Because you just weren’t paying attention.
I’ve had a total of 4 drivers run the bus’s stop sign this year. And every one of you knows you did it. I’ve had far more drivers speed up to get past the bus with amber lights flashing, all to beat those reds coming out. It used to be that running a school bus’s lights was so rare it was almost unheard of. Not anymore. People have been running yellow traffic lights for years, and it seems that mindset has been applied to school bus amber and red lights.
Please don’t. You know it’s a 6 point ticket if caught, and you know about the hefty fines. But you don’t know Cody. Maybe you can afford the increased insurance costs, but can you afford the knowledge that you killed a child because you weren’t paying attention or were in too big of a hurry to stop for a school bus?
You know who you are.
Dan Sexton, Lake Wylie
Don’t blame chamber
Planning and zoning for Lake Wylie is handled by the York County Planning and Zoning Department in York.
They are the ones who with the county council approved the over 20 housing projects and the seventh and eighth, and possibly ninth self storage facilities that are being build in Lake Wylie.
Because Lake Wylie is in the unincorporated area of York County, we are given no information what is being planned and the Lake Wylie Chamber of Commerce is not asked for their input. This will only change when Lake Wylie has its own planning and zoning department.
Charles Wood, chairman of Lake Wylie Chamber of Commerce
