Friends of the York County Library honors volunteers

Faye Wyatt of Rock Hill is the 2015 recipient of the Joann W. McMaster Volunteer of the Year award.

The award is named in honor of Joann McMaster, who helped found the Friends of the York County Library organization in 1975 and served as its first president. This year marks the 40th anniversary for the organization.

A Friends of the Library volunteer for more than five years, Faye has served as a Friends of the Library board member and volunteers on a weekly basis at the library. She has logged more than 400 volunteer hours in 2015.

The friends also recognized nearly 100 volunteers, who donated more than 3,600 hours on behalf of York County Libraries in 2015. The Friends of the Library hold used book sales and other events to raise funds for library programs. They are the major sponsor of the summer reading programs for all ages and other library needs not provided for in the library budget. For more information, visit yclibrary.org or call 803-981-5837.

Libraries collecting food for fines

York County libraries will collect Food for Fines through Dec. 31 to encourage the return of overdue library materials while giving back to the community.

Library users may pay off fines for overdue materials with nonperishable food and personal hygiene items. For each donated item, $1 will be credited to outstanding fines, but will not cover the cost of lost or damaged materials.

All types of nonperishable food items, toiletries and disposable diapers will be collected. Items will be donated to York County area food banks in the community in which they are given to help replenish supplies depleted by the high demand of the holidays. Library patrons are encouraged to participate even if they have no outstanding library fines.

York County libraries are in Rock Hill, Fort Mill, Clover, Lake Wylie and York. Donations will also be accepted on the Bookmobile. For more information, visit yclibrary.org.
