1996
▪ Dr. Bob Martin, Fort Mill native and longtime Fort Mill physician, retired. Martin said he planned to do a lot of fishing and hiking.
▪ Veteran Councilman Grady Ervin defeated two challengers for the Ward 2 seat on Town Council. Charlie Boyette was elected to an at-large seat.
▪ Fort Mill Town Council turned down a request for a Main Street firm to designate eight parking spaces in a town-owned parking lot for truck loading and unloading.
▪ Laura Key, Fort Mill High School sophomore, set a school record for girls’ basketball when she poured in 33 points against Great Falls.
1976
▪ Fort Mill’s lone juror on the York County Grand Jury for 1976 was Cletus H. Helms.
▪ The Fort Mill Yellow Jackets suffered their first double loss of the year as both the boys’ and girls’ teams fell to the Andrew Jackson Volunteers of Kershaw.
▪ Little Miss Sharon Elizabeth Watts, 3 1/2 , was recently crowned “Wee Miss Indian Land” at the Indian Land High School auditorium.
▪ The Kut and Kurl Beauty Salon opened at 102 Main St. with Bobbie Morris, Judy Freeman and Teresa Therrell as operators.
1956
▪ The Fort Mill Yellow Jackets won their third straight game of the season, 58-57, over WTS. Dickie Adkins led the Jackets with 16 points.
▪ Forty-four voters went to the polls to vote in the municipal election. There were no contested races and Luther G. Patterson was re-elected mayor of Fort Mill.
1936
▪ Tip Neal, operator of a café on White Street, near the Southern Railway, was charged with selling illegal liquor.
▪ Practically all of the 11-inch snowfall of Dec. 29 had disappeared because of recent heavy rains. A period of cold days and nights contributed to the slow dissipation of the snow.
1916
▪ B.E. Patterson was re-elected for a two-year term as mayor of Fort Mill defeating W.B. Meacham.
▪ An idea was being pitched around to build a bridge across the Catawba River from Fort Mill to Rock Hill at the end of J.M. Cherry’s property on the Rock Hill side of the river.
