Clover grad serving as missile technician
Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Devin Steele, a 2007 Clover High School graduate, is a missile technician serving at the Kings Bay-based command, supporting Ohio-class ballistic and guided missile submarines.
A Navy missile technician is responsible for performing maintenance on nuclear weapons and weapons security systems aboard Strategic Weapons Facility Atlantic.
“I like gaining the experience from the Navy," he said. "I can apply them in the civilian sector."
Measuring 560 feet long, 42 feet wide and weighing more than 16,500 tons, a nuclear-powered propulsion system helps push the ship through the water at more than 20 knots.
The Navy’s ballistic missile submarines, often referred to as “boomers,” serve as an undetectable launch platform for intercontinental ballistic missiles. They are designed specifically for stealth, extended patrols and the precise delivery of missiles if directed by the President.
2 exposed to rabies from horse in York County
Two people in York County were exposed to rabies from a horse thought to be lame but turned out to be rabid, health officials said.
The people were providing care to the horse Jan. 7 when the horse started to exhibit aggressive behavior. The horse was killed and tested and found Jan. 11 to have had rabies. Both people were told to seek medical treatment for possible rabies exposure, state health officials said in a release Jan. 13.
Horses are not required to have rabies shots. However, state officials encourage rabies vaccinations for any animals that have frequent contact with people.
The horse is the first York County animal to test positive for rabies in 2016 and the second animal statewide. Nine animals tested positive in York County in 2015 out of 130 confirmed rabies cases in the state.
