Register for Girls on Run through Feb. 5 in York County

Girls on the Run of the Tri County, presented by Piedmont Medical Center, is gearing up for its spring season with registration running through Feb. 5.

Girls on the Run is a positive youth development program for girls in third to eighth grade. The program culminates with completing a 5k run.

The goal is to develop confidence through accomplishment, strength of character and create connections with peers and adults while establishing an appreciation of healthy lifestyle choices.

Girl Placement Day through a lottery system is Feb. 8. Participants will be randomly selected to fill the available openings. The spring season begins the week of Feb. 15 and ends with the celebratory Girls on the Run 5K on April 30.

Volunteer opportunities are available for coaches.

River Hills Women’s group meeting Feb. 17

The River Hills Women’s Club luncheon is at 11:30 a.m. Feb. 17 at the River Hills Country Club.

Susan Holland will discuss her book, “The Sex Life of Birds,” and share information on hummingbirds.

Lunch is served at 12:30 p.m. Cash bar will be available.

Joy of Gardening set Feb. 27

Early registration is open for the 11th annual Joy of Gardening Symposium on Feb. 27 at Baxter Hood Center.

The keynote speaker is Norman Winter, director of the University of Georgia’s Coastal Georgia Botanical Gardens in Savannah, Ga. A nationally syndicated columnist, Winter will discuss “Hot New Plants and Captivating Combinations.” He also will lead one of six break-out sessions, covering topics ranging from attracting pollinators to succulent gardens. Paula Gross, assistant director of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte Botanical Gardens, will give the closing program.

Admission to the symposium, sponsored by the Master Gardeners of York County, also includes lunch, vendors offering garden-related products and door prizes.

4-H 4K Run 4-Health March 5

York County 4-H will host the 4-H 4K Run 4-Health at 9 a.m. March 5.

The four H’s in 4-H stand for head, heart, hands and health. This 4-kilometer run is designed to encourage a healthy lifestyle among youth and community members to increase physical activity.
