Lake Wylie Scout knows the ropes to Eagle project success
Harry Snow, 15, of Lake Wylie with Troop 365 completed his Eagle project – a four station low-ropes course at York Middle School.
The course on the walking trail behind the school helps develop teamwork, coordination and communication skills.
The project started Nov. 15 and ended Dec. 6.
Total numbers for the project are:
▪ Four low ropes activity stations: Whale Watch, Rope Bridge, All-Aboard, T.P. Shuffle.
▪ People working on the project: 28 (15 Scouts, 6 leaders, 7 parents and friends).
▪ Hours spent by everyone: 195.
▪ Cost for materials and supplies: $804.
The school paid most of the cost, but the remaining amount was contributed by the Troop leaders and parents. Some material, including telephone poles and rope, were donated by Scoutmaster Jason Floyd. Lowe’s of York also pitched in providing discount pricing on most of the items purchased. Leaders and parents also provided tools and equipment to help construct the stations.
The project included identifying locations for the activity stations, designing constructions, listing materials and supplies required, then budgeting.
Work also included preparing the areas, drilling holes for poles and posts and construction of platforms for two of the stations.
School principal at the time Rod Ruth suggested the idea, wanting to see walking trails through the woods on the school property put to better use. Ruth was formerly assistant principal at Oakridge Middle School, where a small low-ropes course had been constructed by another Scout for his Eagle project. Ruth is now principal at Clover High School, and York Middle’s new principal Richard Ball, an Eagle Scout himself, was receptive to the idea.
According to assistant principal Daniel Hall, the completed course is “awesome.”
Snow is a sophomore at Clover High School and has been in Scouting since 2006 in Tiger Club. He crossed into Boy Scouts in 2011, and joined Troop 365 at All Saints Catholic Church.
