1996
▪ Low temperatures ranging from 0 to 5 degrees kept plumbers and tow truck drivers busy for several days.
▪ Al Steele, who purchased Hinson Motor Co., Fort Mill’s Ford dealership at 514 Tom Hall St. nine years ago, changed the name to Fort Mill Ford and moved it to Gold Hill Road and I-77, sold the business to a Charlotte businessman.
▪ Willie Merritt of Fort Mill, owner of a 1926 truck, received a check for $300 from a Rock Hill auto dealership for having the oldest operating vehicle in the area.
▪ The Fort Mill Middle School girls’ basketball team was 11-0 after defeating Blacksburg 45-8. LaToya Dixon led the Lady Jackets with 16 points.
1976
▪ Two new businesses opened in downtown Fort Mill. Rowe Auto Supply, Inc. opened on East Elliott Street next to the Fort Mill Armory and the Odds & Ins Shop opened in the Main Street storefront which previously housed The Men’s Shop.
▪ York County’s Home Rule plan, the first in the state, was ruled unconstitutional.
▪ Fort Mill’s basketball teams went 3-1 for the week. The Jackets defeated Blacksburg and Cowpens. The Jackettes defeated Blacksburg and lost to Cowpens.
▪ Sam Leslie was re-elected as chief of the Riverview Volunteer Fire Department. Bill Osborne was assistant chief.
1956
▪ Mr. J. C. Pierce, superintendent of carding and spinning at the Fort Mill Plant of The Springs Mills, announced his candidacy for the Fort Mill School Board.
▪ Fort Mill and Indian Land split a twin bill in the local gym. The Fort Mill girls, led by Joyce Sutton, won 63-31. The boys were defeated by the Warriors 66-51. Johnny Adams had 26 points for the Jackets.
1936
▪ Fort Mill was saddened to learn of the death of Miss Addie Harris, 76, of Fort Mill. Miss Harris was a member of one of the pioneer families of York County.
▪ Delbert Cranford, Ben Ardrey, Sutton Epps, Robert Bradford, Jake McAlhaney and Godfrey Nims were on the Honor Roll list of the graded school.
1916
▪ W. E. Griffin, owner of a mercantile business just beyond the eastern limits of the town, was to build a store house at Booth and Rocky Streets.
▪ The U.S. Senate confirmed the appointment of B. Henry Massey as Postmaster of Fort Mill. Mr. Massey had filled the position for something like 25 years.
