Humane Society of York County holding adoption event Feb. 13-14

Humane Society of York County Valentine’s Weekend Adoption Event is 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Feb. 13-14 at PetSmart, 9515 South Boulevard.

Gardener’s Bench resumes Feb. 13

The Gardener’s Bench, the weekly call-in show offering gardening advice, resumes Feb. 13, between 8:30 a.m. and 10 a.m., on WRHI 94.3FM/1340AM,.

Hosts Clemson Extension Agent Paul Thompson and David Powell, a certified arborist, with Bartlett Tree Experts, answer questions about lawn care, vegetables, and tree and shrub maintenance. The number is 803-324-1340.

The Gardener’s Bench airs during the annual growing season (February through November) and is a public service of Clemson Extension Service.

Downton Abbey-inspired fundraiser March 5

A Farewell Salute to Downton Abbey, an elegant fundraiser for historic Rock Hill inspired by the PBS program, is 6-9 p.m. March 5 at the City Club of Rock Hill, 140 E. Main St.

The event will include cocktails, wine, champagne and heavy hors d’oeuvres, such as Mrs. Patmore’s tiny mince meat pies, Earl of Grantham’s slow roasted hand-carved beef with root vegetables, tea sandwiches, smoked trout in filo cups and bread pudding with salted caramel sauce. There will be period music, prizes and other 1920s forms of entertainment. Vintage dress is encouraged; black tie is optional.

Cost is $70 per person before Feb. 19; $80 after. Each ticket includes two drink tickets with cash bar thereafter. Proceeds go to the sustainability of historic Rock Hill’s White Home, a cornerstone of Rock Hill’s newly designated Cultural Arts District.

Water Watcher training March 5

The Catawba Riverkeeper Foundation hosts a free, one-day Water Watcher program 9 a.m.-4 p.m. March 5 at Cabela’s in Fort Mill.

Led by Riverkeeper Sam Perkins, this training will include instruction on the latest techniques, procedures, legal aspects, and historical knowledge to properly monitor the river basin. There is also an outdoor, in-the-field component.

Water Watchers are certified volunteers who are the network of eyes, ears and voice of the Catawba River.

Training is free and open to the public. All materials will be provided. No previous knowledge is needed. Wear shoes that can get wet or dirty. Lunch is available to purchase at Cabela's Deli & Grill.

Clover center needs volunteers

Clover Area Assistance Center seeks volunteer help in several areas.

▪ A volunteer to prepare information to CAAC’s webmaster on a biweekly or monthly basis. Skills needed include ability to organize facts and prepare brief articles, take digital photos, and communicate with agency partners. For an application, email karencaac@bellsouth.net.

▪ Volunteers who can assist with routine clerical tasks. Essential skills include attention to detail, organization and ability to work independently. This is a weekly or biweekly position. For an application, email karencaac@bellsouth.net.

▪ Volunteers with similar skills are needed to complete two projects that require phone contact, website reviews and information gathering. For an application, email karencaac@bellsouth.net.

CAAC is at 1130 S.C. 55 E. In addition to food, Clover Area Assistance Center provides financial support for utilities, rent, fuels (kerosene, propane, oil), firewood, prescriptions and adult education. Through the support of the River Hills Lions Club, clients are eligible to apply for vision care and hearing aids. CAAC also operates a small medical and a dental clinic. Warming centers open in Rock Hill

The United Way of York County, Bethel United Methodist Church and The Salvation Army will set up Winter Warming Centers for the homeless. Last year, the centers served more than 200 men, women and children at two locations.

Locations and times available are:

▪ Women and Children’s Warming Center: The Salvation Army, 119 Charlotte Ave., Rock Hill. The center will be open each night at 6 p.m. through March 20.

▪ Men’s Warming Center: Bethel United Methodist Church, 1232 Curtis St., Rock Hill. The center will be open each night at 6 p.m. through March 13.

Veterans group meets in Lake Wylie

The Point Man International Ministries group meets the second and fourth Tuesday of the month at The Journey church.

Point Man is a veteran-to-veteran ministry with a primary service to offer spiritual healing from PTSD. Point Man also is involved in group meetings, hospital visits, conferences, supplying speakers for churches and veteran groups, welcome home projects and community support.

The organization, which includes more than 200 local outposts, reaches spiritually and emotionally wounded veterans.

The local group meets the second and fourth Tuesday of the month.
