1996

▪ The old A&P building on Clebourne Street, Fort Mill, was deemed an eyesore by Fort Mill Town Council and would soon be razed.

▪ Formal announcement was expected soon concerning a wholesale food warehouse to be built off Banks Road for Biggers Brothers.

▪ John E. Wilson of Marshall Street, Fort Mill, was recognized by Kanawha Insurance Co. as being the company’s third leading sales representative for 1995.

▪ Mike Pope of Indian Land High School was named an assistant coach for the South Carolina team in the 1996 Shrine Bowl. Steve Boyd of Fort Mill High School was to be an assistant coach for the North team in the 1996 North-South game in Myrtle Beach.

1976

▪ The Fort Mill School District’s Early Support Program for Beginning Students program was rated as one of the best innovative programs in the state.

▪ Mrs. Gwen Rhinehardt and Mrs. Sheri Sutton, representing the Woman’s Club of Fort Mill, received a $100 grant from the state club for work with senior citizens.

▪ Eddie Spivey of Fort Mill cut down a dead tree just off Confederate Street that had 213 annual rings.

▪ Jack Miles, president of the Fort Mill High School Booster Club, urged more Fort Mill people to join the club and support the school’s athletic programs.

1956

▪ The Times published an editorial voicing support for Fort Mill Chief of Police Heyward Adkins and his request for a pay raise. Chief Adkins was also being courted by the York County Rural Police.

▪ Springs Cotton Mills announced that would begin selling company-owned houses in the Charlotte Highway area. Current residents would have first priority.

1936

▪ The first street car in Fort Mill arrived by truck. The car was set up near Main and Railroad streets and would be used as a café owned and operated by Ray Norris.

▪ The sixth snow of the winter season dropped four inches on Fort Mill, bringing further discomfort to many homes already short of fuel oil.
