▪ The Fort Mill School Board was working on a deal with Leroy Springs and Company and the Close family to build a middle school next to the Leroy Springs Recreation Complex.
▪ A derelict building on Cleburne Street that housed the A&P Supermarket for more than 30 years was demolished.
▪ Julia Brackett of Peacock Run, Fort Mill, won the American Legion State Oratorical Contest and received a $1,600 scholarship.
▪ York County gave the go-ahead to a plan that would turn 5,500 acres of Close family properties in Fort Mill Township into six “villages”.
1976
▪ The Fort Mill Junior High School Yellow Jackets defeated Clover 29-27 for the York County Junior High Athletic Conference Tournament Championship. The junior Jackets finished with a 12-0 record.
▪ Williams Road Baptist Church celebrated its fourth anniversary. Pastor William W. Ferguson was the church’s pastor all four years.
▪ The Red and White Food Store at 416 Tom Hall St. sold cartons of Coke or Pepsi for 89 cents with deposit, yellow corn, four ears for 59 cents and ground chuck, $1.19 a pound.
▪ The Celtics and the Cougars won regular season titles in the Fort Mill Junior and Midget boys’ basketball leagues.
1956
▪ Fort Mill City Council and Police Chief Heyward Adkins reached an agreement over his salary and Adkins decided to remain as chief of the department.
▪ Recent movies at the Center included “The Lone Ranger,” the masked man’s first feature-length movie, Martin and Lewis in “Artists and Models” and “The Day the World Ended.”
1936
▪ The Fort Mill Police Department set a record when 17 men were locked up in less than 36 hours for drinking too freely.
▪ Plans were being drawn for the new Fort Mill city jail. The new building would be erected at the site of the present jail.
1916
▪ The South Carolina Division of the United Confederate Veterans accepted an invitation to hold their 1916 reunion in Rock Hill.
▪ Governor Manning signed a bill providing for a chain gang sentence on those convicted of selling whiskey.
