1996

▪ Bill Stroup received the Civic Volunteer of the Year Award from the Fort Mill Area Chamber of Commerce. David Bivins was Fort Mill Police Department Officer of the year.

▪ The Indian Land Rescue Squad received approval of $125,000 for a 5,000-square-foot building to be built on the south side of Indian Land Elementary School.

▪ The long-unoccupied Center Theatre building on Main Street was sold back to its former owner, James Wasson.

▪ Fort Mill Community Playhouse was staging “Barnum” at the Fort Mill High School Auditorium. Mark Palmer played Barnum and Nina Atwood was Jenny Lind.

1976

▪ Fort Mill’s biennial Democratic Precinct meetings were held at old City Hall. George Tinker, Charles Powers, Manuel Holland and Buddy Mills were elected precinct presidents.

▪ S/Sgt. Fred W. Moore of Fort Mill attended a special recruiter school and was appointed a South Carolina National Guard recruiter.

▪ Patricia Cheryl Hinson, 17, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Doug Hinson of Fort Mill, was recently crowned Indian Land High School’s Miss F.H.A.

▪ Matthews Excavating Co. of Rock Hill was low bidder on two Fort Mill town projects including the razing of the Patterson home on Tom Hall Street which would become part of Unity Cemetery.

1956

▪ Cody W. Smith, Fort Mill, who was completing his first term as York County Treasurer, announced that he would be a candidate for re-election.

▪ The juniors of Fort Mill High School, led by Johnny Adams’ 15 points, defeated the seniors, backed by Kirby Patterson’s 12 points, by a resounding 56-27 score in the class tournament championship game.

1936

▪ The Times learned that William J. Ervin, old Fort Mill boy, had been elected vice president of the Republic Cotton Mills at Great Falls.

▪ Tip Neal, operator of a restaurant on White Street, was notified that his license to operate the business would be canceled due to gambling activity at the restaurant.

1916

▪ Gold Hill School in Fort Mill Township introduced an innovation among the schools of the county by serving a noonday luncheon.

▪ Misses Majorie Mills and Edith Parks each won a week of free tickets to the Majestic Theatre for having the highest general average in the Fort Mill Graded School. Each had a 98 average.
