Lake Wylie woman wins big in photo contest

Mount Holly’s Matt Nichols was named the Best in Show winner of Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden’s 2015 Shutterbug Photography Contest. Nichols’ photo of an Aechmea plant in the Garden’s Orchid Conservatory took home first place in the plants category as well as best in show.

Shelley Stachler of Lake Wylie earned five awards, including a first in the water category.

Judges chose the first, second and third place winners, as well as honorable mentions in seven categories for adult amateur photographers and one for youth photographers. Judges Craig McCausland, Rick Belden of Rick Belden Photography, Rick Haithcox of Rick Haithcox Photography, and Stephanie Wisnet, Marketing Associate at Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden, selected the winning photographs from over 180 entries.

The winning photographs are posted on the Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden’s Pinterest page, and will be on exhibit beginning March 21 at the Belmont garden.

Things Remembered Framing and Yarn of Gastonia sponsored the contest, and provided the matting and framing for the winning entries.

▪ Orchids/Tropical Plants: first, Jim Taft of Charlotte; second, Shelley Stachler of Lake Wylie; third, Kimberly Ellis of Indian Land; honorable mention, Gerry King of Rock Hill.

▪ Wildlife: first, Michael Trznadel of Charlotte; second, Shelley Stachler of Lake Wylie; third, Dennis Paul Rubin of Charlotte; honorable mention, Suzanne Park of Charlotte.

▪ Plants: first, Matt Nichols of Mount Holly; second, Mary Roberts of Tega Cay; third, Edgar Payne of Gastonia; honorable mention, Kimberly Ellis of Indian Land.

▪ Water: first, Shelley Stachler of Lake Wylie; second, Judy Young, Newton, N.C.; third, Rebecca Thomas of charlotte; honorable mention, Gina Lorello of Matthews, N.C.
