Cops, firefighters from Fort Mill area visit tykes

Local law enforcement officers and firefighters celebrated the National Association for the Education of Young Children’s Week of the Young Child with preschool students at Smart Kids Child Development Center on Pleasant Road last Wednesday.

The school hosted visitors from the Flint Hill Fire Department, the York County Sheriff’s Office’s K-9 Unit, and the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department on Wednesday for Superhero Day. The event helped preschoolers make positive connections with the community “superheroes” charged with keeping them safe, explains Jessica Fitzgibbon, a teacher in the 3-year-old classroom at Smart Kids.

“We’re trying to connect children with local enforcement to create a bond as early as we can so they learn not to be afraid of them, and that they’re someone they can go to if they’re in trouble,” Fitzgibbon said.
