Church group gives $5,800 to Clover Area Special Olympics
All Saints Knights give to Special Olympics
The All Saints Council No. 14475 of the Knights of Columbus presented a check for more than $5,800 to the Clover Area Special Olympics.
The money was raised by the Knight’s annual Columbus HOPE Foundation collection drive, held several weeks outside area merchants including Bi-Lo and Food Lion supermarkets in Lake Wylie and Clover, Walmart-Lake Wylie, Bagel Boat, Jersey Mike’s and Waffle House.
“The total raised for us by the Knights continues to increase each year and is greatly appreciated,” said Patti Myers, special education teacher in Clover schools and coordinator for Clover Area Special Olympics. “The funds donated by the Knights each year continues to allow us to further expand our Unified Program events in both Clover High School and Clover Middle School, and helps significantly with the high costs of transporting our athletes to and from events, as well as to purchase uniforms and equipment.”
The Special Olympics Unified Program partners intellectually disabled athletes with non-disabled partners to jointly compete in various sporting events, including bowling and badminton.
Rick Engel, grand knight of the All Saints Council said the Columbus HOPE Foundation, initiated in 1977 by the South Carolina State Council of the Knights of Columbus, “is dedicated to increasing the self-reliance and dignity of our citizens with intellectual disabilities. Special Olympics shares this philosophy and does a terrific job toward meeting this goal.”
