1996
▪ Fort Mill High School’s boys’ tennis team, coached by Willie Ware, won its third consecutive State Class 3A Championship by defeating Dreher 4-2.
▪ Jack and Phyllis Childers had three grandchildren graduating from high school. Corey would graduate from Fort Mill High, Ashley James from Indian Land High and Marie from South Mecklenburg High.
▪ Shawn Crawford of Indian Land High School won the 100 and 200 meter races at the Class 1A State Track and Field Championships.
▪ Divers recovered the body a 19-year-old Indian Land man from the Catawba River. It was believed he drowned while swimming with friends.
1976
▪ Richard Sorrow was named Mr. Jacket, Deborah Osborne was named Miss Jackette and Chuck Mullinax won the Billy Marrett Award at Fort Mill High School’s All-Sport banquet.
▪ Tommy’s General Store opened on Doby’s Bridge Road and Fairway Drive. A 64-oz. Pepsi-Cola sold for 79 cents.
▪ The Fort Mill School Board adopted a 1976-1977 calendar that had school starting on Aug. 26 and graduation being held on June 3.
▪ Dallene Marie Patterson of Indian Land graduated magna cum laude from Winthrop College.
1956
▪ A fine concrete skating rink was under construction on the campus of Fort Mill High School. The rink was courtesy of Col. Elliott Springs.
▪ Among those pictured in the Fort Mill’s Future Citizens feature were Mary Martin and Richard Huff, Rusty Rector, Joe Hinson, Brenda Powell, Jane Patterson and Cindy Howie.
1936
▪ A wreck on the Charlotte Highway caused by a group of boys riding around in a rattletrap car sent two women to the hospital.
▪ Miss Lois Waters and Miss Dottie Jean Sutton were winners in a beauty contest sponsored by the PTA.
1916
▪ The first rain to fall in this vicinity since April 7 gave some relief to farmers. The dry spell had caused great injury to the grain crop.
▪ Closing exercises of the Belair school were held at the school. A picnic, held on the school grounds, followed.
