Pennies for Progress meeting May 18 in Clover

Pennies for Progress, York County’s voter-approved cent sales tax for road improvements, is heading toward its fourth campaign. A vote is planned Nov. 7, 2017.

A campaign commission is meeting residents and municipal officials across the county for input on which projects should be included. The nearest meeting to Lake Wylie is 6 p.m. May 18 at the community center, 120 Bethel St., Clover.

Conservation group meeting May 19

The next commissioners meeting of the York Soil and Water Conservation District will be at 5 p.m. May 19 at the USDA Service Center, 1460 E. Alexander Love Hwy.

Meet the candidates event June 3

A Meet the Candidates Evening is open to the public 5-8 p.m. June 3 at River Hills Country Club.

The format will allow for each candidate in the primary to briefly tell about themselves, what they have done and why they are running for office. There also will be time to meet community members.

Candidates attending include York County Council Dist. 2, Allison Love and Doug Meyer-Cuno; 5th Congressional District, Mick Mulvaney and Ray Craig; York County Sheriff, Kevin Tolson and John Williams.

The event is coordinated by Lake Wylie Chamber of Commerce, Lake Wylie Pilot, Clover/Lake Wylie Republican Women’s Club and River Hills Country Club.

Boys & Girls Clubs names CEO

Boys & Girls Clubs of York County named Grace M. Lewis as its new chief executive officer, effective May 23.

Lewis has more than 15 years of experience in the nonprofit arena.

“Of the 78 applicants for our CEO position, Grace distinguished herself as a professional who excels in both program administration and developing strong external relationships that drive support for vital programming – a combination that is exactly what we sought in our next chief executive,” said Gale DiGiorgio, BGCYC search committee and board governance chair.

Lewis served as Vice President of Resource Development at Girl Scouts Carolinas Peaks to Piedmont. During her tenure, she grew overall giving by 33 percent, implemented processes and systems for better organizational management and served on the council executive team. She is a Certified Fundraising Executive, received her certificate in nonprofit management from Duke University and is a graduate of Arizona State University’s Non-Profit Executive Leadership Program. Her community involvement includes Paul Harris Fellow.

She and husband Darrell Lewis have two sons and two grandchildren.

Historian honored with national award

The National Society of Daughters of Founders and Patriots of America has presented Michael Scoggins with the society’s annual Golden Shield Award.

The award is in recognition of Scoggins’ contributions as a writer and researcher, and for his commitment to local and regional military and American history. Scoggins, historian for Culture and Heritage Museums since 1999, also serves as research director for the Southern Revolutionary War Institute within the Historical Center of York County, 210 E. Jefferson St., York.

Scoggins is the author of more than 50 published books, academic papers and articles that preserve the history of South Carolina and the Southern region.

The National Society of Daughters of Founders and Patriots of America is a lineage society founded in 1898 that focuses on promoting patriotic and historical projects aimed at preserving the history of the American Colonial era. For more information, visit nationalsocietydfpa.com.

NC Wildlife accepting award nominations

The North Carolina Wildlife Federation is seeking nominations for the Governor’s Conservation Achievement Awards – the state’s highest honors given to conservation leaders who take an active role in protecting North Carolina’s natural resources.

Since 1958, the awards have honored individuals, associations, businesses and governmental bodies that have exhibited an unwavering commitment to conservation in North Carolina. An awards committee comprised of qualified conservationists will review all nominations and select the state’s winners. The 2016 awards will be presented at the Governor’s Conservation Achievement Awards banquet Sept. 10 in Cary, N.C.

The 2016 nomination deadline is June 30. Nominees should demonstrate outstanding achievement in and dedication to conservation. Candidates are not required to hold professional positions related to conservation. Awards are given for contributions, whether volunteer or professional, and in categories ranging from water, land and forests to youth, sportsman, and wildlife volunteer. Nominations may be submitted by individuals, businesses or organizations.

Volunteers needed

Victory Farm seeks volunteers who can give at least two hours a week.

Victory Farm is an adaptive horsemanship and therapeutic riding center specializing in equestrian therapies for the special needs rider. The programs help children and adults cope with challenges including cerebral palsy, stroke patients, riders with injuries including amputees and wounded military.

Horse experience is not necessary. Volunteers will be trained to work beside clients and horses.

Free vessel safety checks available

The Catawba Sail and Power Squadron, the local unit of the United States Power Squadrons serving the Lake Wylie area, holds free Vessel Safety Checks for any boater.

All types of boats may be checked including power boats, pontoon boats, sail boats, kayaks and canoes. Upon successful completion of the Vessel Safety Check, the boater will receive a decal to display on the boat.

The results of vessel checks are for statistical purposes without reference to the owner of the boat.

Applications from artists accepted

The Visions of Art exhibit is accepting applications from local artists to be part of the Sept. 23-24 showcase at River Hills Country Club.

Applicants from experienced artists and ages 12-18 will be accepted through July. Framed artwork, mixed media, photography and sculpture accepted. The number of artists showing will be determined by space available.

The show fee is $30, which includes three entries and an invitation to the Visions preview cocktail party and art stroll 7-9:30 p.m. Sept. 23.

Veterans group meets in Lake Wylie

The Point Man International Ministries group meets the second and fourth Tuesday of the month at The Journey church.

Point Man is a veteran-to-veteran ministry with a primary service to offer spiritual healing from PTSD. Point Man also is involved in group meetings, hospital visits, conferences, supplying speakers for churches and veteran groups, welcome home projects and community support.

The organization, which includes more than 200 local outposts, reaches spiritually and emotionally wounded veterans.

The local group meets the second and fourth Tuesday of the month.
