Storms can’t keep anglers away from Lake Wylie tourney

The Thursday Night Tournament Trail continued with little effect from the storms last week.

“The stormy weather trimmed the field down this Thursday night to 42 boats but still a good turnout,” said trail co-organizer Erwin Gaston of the May 12 event. “At the beginning of the tournament, it all depended on the section of the lake you decided to fish as to whether you got rained on are not.

“But by the end of the night, everyone was wearing their rain gear.”

Mike Stephens and Nick Webber had an impressive bag of five bass that weighed 18.33 pounds.

Second place went to Jason Quinn and Tony Calacurcio with 15.24 pounds, followed by Mark Leech and Tim Chapman with 14.29 pounds.

Fourth went to Brandon Chandler and Calvin Weaver with 14.04 pounds.

Two teams – the first- and third-place finishers – tied for biggest fish both reeling in a 4.72-pounder. The tie is broken by heaviest five fish weight giving it to Stephens and Webber.

Gaston said there are 15 tournaments to go in the since.

“For anyone looking to get into this year’s championship, you must fish 11 regular tournaments to qualify,” Gaston said.

The weekly night tournament runs through Aug. 25, with launches and weigh-ins at Buster Boyd Access Area. The Championship Fish-off is Sept. 2-3.

Trail sponsors are Academy Sports and Kangaroo Express.
