Lake Wylie fishing tournament blessed with good weather, big hauls

A field of 44 vied for the win May 19 after rains brought cool weather to the Thursday Night Tournament Trail on Lake Wylie.

“It felt like an early April night but the rains cleared long enough for us to get the tournament in,” said trail co-organizer Erwin Gaston.

Team Mike Stephens and Nathan Webber won for the second week in a row with 16.90 pounds, as a close second-place finish went to Matt Queen with a 16.84 pounds.

Third place went to the father-son team Marcus and Zach Leech with 14.76 pounds, followed by Bryan New and Chris Bumgardner with 14.64 pounds. The latter brought in the big fish of the night, tipping the scale at 5.40 pounds.

The weekly tournament runs through Aug. 25, with launches and weigh-ins at Buster Boyd Access Area. The Championship Fish-off is Sept. 2-3.

Trail sponsors are Academy Sports and Kangaroo Express.
