Fort Mill history: Do you remember?

1996

▪ Announcement was made that Anne Springs Close would carry the Olympic torch through downtown Fort Mill as part of the Olympic torch relay to Atlanta.

▪ Jennifer Smith of Mount Pleasant, daughter of Fort Mill natives Cody and Betty Anglin Smith, won second place in the Piccolo Spoleto Outdoor Art Exhibition in Charleston.

▪ A Tega Cay police officer, acquitted of DUI earlier in the year, lost his job when the Tega Cay Police Department downsized from seven to six officers.

▪ Checkers Restaurant on Katy Lane, Fort Mill, was expanding in order to provide live entertainment.

1976

▪ Robin Allen, daughter of Mr. (Coach) and Mrs. Gus Allen, was crowned Miss Fort Mill of 1976. Susan Price was first runner up and Dora Wilson was second runner up.

▪ Billy Alexander, 22, won the vacant alderman-at-large seat on Fort Mill City Council with 121 votes. Larry Brown and Clyde Short tied for second with 88 votes each.

▪ An excellent series of baseball clinics to be taught by Bill Banks, Fred Blackwelder, Ray Hozey and Bill Richards were scheduled for the summer.

▪ Mayor Lunsford McFadden announced that Fort Mill would receive $69,569 in revenue sharing funds.

1956

▪ Miss Martha Randall, beauteous and shapely 22-year-old Fort Mill lass, was crowned Miss Charlotte and would represent Charlotte in the Miss North Carolina pageant.

▪ A new beauty establishment, Edith’s Beauty Shop, owned and operated by Mrs. Edith McFadden, opened at 22 Confederate Street.

1936

▪ Having sold his street car restaurant on Railroad Avenue, Roy Norris was preparing to open another restaurant in the Jones Building on Main Street.

▪ “Sky High,” a three-part comedy drama with musical specialties and sponsored by the Fort Mill Fire Department, was presented in the graded school auditorium.

1916

▪ It was reported that the Fort Mill school was the only school in York County that consisted of 11 grades.

▪ Reports indicated that Hamilton Carhartt was making preparations to build a big cotton mill at Carhartt Station, three miles south of Fort Mill.
