Letter to the editor: Stop leaving car idling

Something disconcerting has caught my attention in our community. Some people are leaving their cars idling while they ‘run’ into the store. This is adversely affecting the quality of our air.

I have been hesitant to ask the person in the car if they would turn their motor off. One never knows how a person is going to react.

Recently a car pulled in next to me at the store and the driver left the car idling. I decided to take a stand. I kindly asked the gentleman if he would turn off the motor. He said “I think not.” I responded “Sir, I am sorry to hear that for my sake and for the sake of our environment.” (Keep in mind that this occurred before the weather got hot.)

Even if you are fetching one item and you know where it is, by the time you check out and return to your car, you have unnecessarily polluted our air. Please cease doing this.
