Leader of Belmont garden resigns
Kara Newport has resigned as executive director of Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden after 10 years to accept a position at Filoli in Woodside, Calif. Her resignation is effective Aug. 11.
Harding Stowe, chairman of DSBG’s board of directors, said the board will make a decision about an interim director soon and begin a search later this summer.
During Newport’s tenure, the garden’s attendance has doubled from 60,000 guests in 2005 to more than 123,000 last year with guests from all 50 states. Membership has grown from 3,500 members to nearly 6,000. The garden’s board of directors is completing a five-year strategic plan.
Newport arrived in 2006 and immediately started planning construction of The Orchid Conservatory. She and board members led the fundraising effort for and construction of Lost Hollow, the children’s garden. Since it opened in October 2014, attendance has increased 53 percent, membership by 66 percent and school group attendance by 50 percent.
In 2013, she was elected to the board of the American Public Gardens Association and now serves as treasurer.
