Rain doesn’t wash out Lake Wylie fishing tournament

Rain at blastoff time for Lake Wylie’s weekly fishing tournament will wet boats, but doesn’t dampen spirits.

“The sign-up period of the Thursday Night Tournament Trail saw heavy rains that brought some welcome cooler temperatures,” said trail co-organizer Erwin Gaston. “The field of 43 boats took flight to look for the illusive summer time Lake Wylie largemouth bass and as usual, somebody finds them.”

Team Robert Fowler and Chris Dover filled their live well with five bass that weighed in at 14.95 pounds. They had the big fish of the night at 5.01 pounds.

Second place went to Mike Stephens with five bass that topped the scale at 11.80 pounds.

The weekly tournament runs through Aug. 25, with launch and weigh-in at Buster Boyd Access Area. The championship is Sept. 2-3.

Trail sponsors are Academy Sports, Kangaroo Express and Sparks Grading.
