Five Below is the first of several new openings in Steele Creek Crossing, with others expected monthly into the fall.

Five Below opened July 8 at 12740 S. Tryon St., between Goodwill and Publix buildings. The store sells items for $5 or less. Five Below, headquartered in Philadelphia, has more than 450 stores with more than 80 store openings planned this year.

Shoppers took to the new Steele Creek store quickly in its first week.

“They’ve been very pleased with the initial interest, and so have we,” said John Dosser with property leasing company Childress Klein. “So far, so good.”

Sharon Wottle from Fort Mill brought two children to Five Below on Friday. It was their second trip since the store opened.

“It’s great,” she said, having never been to a Five Below before this one opened. “They have all sorts of things, kind of have a little bit of everything. And the kids are having fun. The kids can find something, too.”

Signs are up for two of three new businesses at the same address. The next to open will be the largest.

“We anticipate the new T.J. Maxx in Charlotte will open in mid-August,” said Brittany Farrell, company spokesperson.

T.J. Maxx is a value retailer of brand name clothes, home goods and other items at prices below department stores. The nearest locations are in Gastonia, Rock Hill, Pineville and South Boulevard in Charlotte.

According to the company’s website, the Pineville location is moving to Steele Creek Crossing with a grand opening celebration set for Aug. 11.

Along with T.J. Maxx, parent company The TJX Companies Inc. operates Marshalls and HomeGoods with store locations nearby in RiverGate shopping center.

After T.J. Maxx, Salon Lofts, currently under construction, is expected to open mid-September. The almost 2,900-square-foot endcap will open as a Nothing But Noodles.

“They just got permitting today, so my guess for them would be mid-October,” Dosser said.

Nothing But Noodles serves a variety of noodle-based cuisine. The restaurant had a location nearby in Steelecroft Shopping Center in the space now occupied Shomars, which opened in 2014. Dosser said his company is confident in the new location and ownership will succeed.

“The difference is you have a different operator who has other Nothing But Noodles as well as other restaurant operations in Charlotte,” Dosser said.

The almost five-acre Steele Creek site that will be home to each business was sold last July for $550,000. It is one of several local development projects associated with Childress Klein, the company behind RiverGate and other past Steele Creek ventures.

A medical building is under construction adjacent the main highway from the new stores. Dosser didn’t have details on that or other projects nearby.

“We’re working on other projects in the area, but nothing we’re not far enough along on to talk about at this point,” he said.
