Fort Mill history: Do you remember?
1996
▪ Greg Thomas, assistant coach at Washington, N.C. High School, was hired as the head football coach at Fort Mill High School succeeding Steve Boyd.
▪ A hearing on rezoning 532 acres in Fort Mill Township belonging to U. S. Representative John Spratt was scheduled for August.
▪ Destiny Leigh Wilson, 9 months, received crowns as Baby Miss at pageants held in Kings Mountain, N.C., and Rock Hill.
▪ Amy Patterson Moore of Indian Land celebrated her 102nd birthday at her home on Harrisburg Road.
1976
▪ The Fort Mill Swim Team, coached by Jim Cook, won the Leroy Springs Aquatics at Springs Park. Members included Anna and Chuck Little, Shelly Pettus, Vereen Barron and Jay White.
▪ Blackwelder Heating and Air opened in the old City Hall building at 220 Main St.
▪ Fort Mill’s football schedule for the 1976 season was, in order, Northwestern, Lewisville, Chester, Pickens, Andrew Jackson, Clinton, Pageland, Chesterfield, Clover, Buford and Rock Hill.
▪ Boat races at Tega Cay proved quite popular with the top two finishers hitting 95 and 93 mph.
1956
▪ Fort Mill’s own Company “H” returned from its annual field training at Fort McClelland, Ala. The Company was the highest rated company in the battalion.
▪ Movies at the Center included “The Searchers” with John Wayne; Disney’s “Song of the South,” “The Man Who Knew Too Much” and “Hot Blood.”
1936
▪ Two government agents were in town to inspect the proposed site for a new Fort Mill Armory on East Elliott Street, across the street from the high school athletic grounds.
▪ Johnny Porter recently built near his restaurant and service station, just across the river on the Fort Mill-Rock Hill Highway, a half dozen tourist cottages.
1916
▪ Work was underway building a ferry across the Catawba to connect Fort Mill and Rock Hill after flood waters had destroyed the only bridge connecting the two cities.
▪ Hope was being entertained that electric power would soon be restored to Fort Mill. Fort Mill had been without power and light since July 16, the day of the great flood.
