Letters to the editor: Tell York County about water service; park good for all

Let county know what you think of water service

I read in the Pilot that the county has not made any decisions concerning CW’s (Carolina Water) expiring contract with the county. Even though it appears that most of County Council members are in favor of a County takeover, it’s far from a done deal. I realize that money will play a crucial role in the negations, I for one would be willing to pay additional fees short term, for long term cost saving and improved service. CW, as far as I am concerned is no longer a “good fit” for the county. Please let the Council members know how you feel. And please contact County Manager Bill Shanahan (Bill.Shanahan@york countygov.com), if you have billing or service issues, that the county should be aware of.

Community park good for all

Yesterday morning as I was walking with a friend, I thought about the proposed Lake Wylie Sports Complex and community park. My friend drove her car to meet for a walk in my neighborhood.

Sometimes we drive to the York Recreation Complex to enjoy a walk together. I hope that the Lake Wylie community realizes the importance of having such a facility nearby for everyone to enjoy all that it could offer. Not only would walking trails be available, but our children would have a place to play on a playground or play sports such as baseball, football, soccer, lacrosse, and disc golf.

Yesterday afternoon, the busy traffic I encountered when I drove south on Hwy. 49 during rush hour reminded me of the tremendous growth Lake Wylie has had over the last ten years. Data shows a 189% growth rate, which is much higher than any other community in York County. Housing units continue to be built. Lake Wylie community members must take action to reserve green space for all to enjoy.

Some green space has already been reserved. Over a decade ago, Crescent Properties donated a 50-acre and an 18-acre parcel of land to be used for York County recreation purposes. The York County Council has already approved over 2 million dollars (of already collected hospitality tax revenue) to be used for the capital build of a Sports Complex. However, the YC Council wants to ensure that the community will support the sustainability of the complex. So, in order for its members to release the funds, our community must show its support on the November ballot. I would encourage every voter to make the proposed complex a reality.
