3 Clover school board seats up for election
Filing for Clover School District Board of Trustees seats opens at noon Aug. 1 and continues through noon Aug. 15.
There is no filing fee, according to the Board of Voter Registration and Elections for York County website. Candidates must fill out forms for Statement of Intention of Candidacy Form – Non-Partisan and Statement of Economic Interests and Campaign Disclosure.
Seats up for election Nov. 8 are: Seat 3, held by Liz Johnson; Seat 4, Franklin Pendleton; and At-Large, Melanie Wilson, who also serves as vice chair.
Pendleton said he will not be filing to run again.
“After 24 years and with no kids in school, I think it’s time to step aside and let someone else have the seat,” he said.
Pendleton, an attorney of Pendleton & Pendleton Law Office in Clover, has served six terms, or 24 years, as a school board member.
“I never planned on serving that long, and started as a new kid on the block a little green behind the ears,” he said. “It was a neat experience, and I hope I did some good for our community.”
Johnson said she intends to run again.
“I’m interested in young people in Clover and the progress our schools are making, and equity in all schools,” she said.
Johnson was appointed to fill the vacated seat before winning the 2012 election.
Candidates interested in running for a seat must live in the election district in which they plan to run, unless they would like to run for an at-large seat, in which case they can live anywhere in the school district. Filing for the election must be completed at a county election office.
School board elections are non-partisan.
Other board members seats do not expire until 2018. They are Mack McCarter, chairman, at-large; Joe Gordon, seat 1; Sherri Ciurlik, seat 2; and Rob Wallace, seat 5.
School board members are not paid. The board meets formally once a month to discuss the district's business, needs and concerns at the district office, 604 Bethel St. The board chairman may call special meetings as needed.
Efforts to obtain comment from Melanie Wilson were unsuccessful.
