Fort Mill history: Do you remember?

1996

▪ U.S. Sen. Strom Thurmond of South Carolina and U. S. Sen. Jesse Helms of North Carolina were in Fort Mill for a fund raiser for Rep. Becky Meacham.

▪ Officers Ray Dixon, 26, and Shannon Culp, 28, were the newest members of the Fort Mill Police Department. Officers Dixon and Culp were Fort Mill High School Graduates.

▪ The Fort Mill Fire Department received a new tanker for its fleet. The 2,900-gallon capacity tanker was accepted by Fort Mill Fire Chief Ken Kerber.

▪ The newest Charlotte Hornet Honey Bee was Lisa Turner of Fort Mill. Turner was a former Los Angeles Rams cheerleader.

1976

▪ Vandalism at two vacant Fort Mill schools, Carothers and the old Riverview school, was a constant source of worry for school administrators and trustees.

▪ A 5-year-old boy, a resident of Nivens trailer park, died under mysterious circumstances.

▪ Nancy Patricia Deese, 1976 honor graduate of Indian Land High School, enlisted in the United States Air Force.

▪ Plans were well underway for the Fort Mill United Fund Campaign for 1976. The goal for the coming year was $23,303.

1956

▪ Rapid progress was being made on the new Kimbrell’s Furniture Store being erected on upper Main Street. The new building was across the street from the current store.

▪ The Fort Mill Bus Station on White Street advertised that it was serving delicious lunches seven days a week and no beer.

1936

▪ During a wind storm, a large limb was blown off a tree knocking the Negro Slave Monument from its base. Mayor Patterson said it would be returned to its base at once.

▪ With most of her children and grandchildren present, Mrs. Hattie Mack celebrated her 91st birthday at her Confederate Street home.

1916

▪ The first through-mail Fort Mill had received from the South since the flood of July 16 arrived by ferryboat from the Rock Hill side of the Catawba River.

▪ Mr. T. D. Faulkner, 83, probably the oldest and one of the best known citizens of Fort Mill, passed away.
