With just two wins under its belt this season, the Nation Ford High girls’ tennis team is showing all the signs of growing pains.

If there was ever any doubt, there’s none now: This is a rebuilding year for the Falcons.

Nation Ford has wins over Indian Land and Olympic this season, but recently dropped shutout matches to Fort Mill (7-0) and Clover (6-0).

Against Fort Mill, No. 1 singles for the Jackets, Elizabeth Fitzgerald, beat Nation Ford’s Josie Perez 6-0, 6-1. The Jackets’ Shreya Katti won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2 singles over Natalie Sawyer.

Fort Mill’s Rachel Brooks won 6-0, 6-0 over Nation Ford’s Lilly Do at No. 3 singles and Wallace Cortazar won 6-0, 6-0 over Nation Ford’s Elizabeth Little at No. 4 singles.

At No. 5 singles, Fort Mill’s Ellie Prain won 6-0, 6-1 over Nation Ford’s Catherine Nixon. And Claire Neal and Jamie Petrella also won at No. 2 doubles for Fort Mill, beating the Falcons’ Cindy Tran and Kathy Do 6-0, 6-2. Fitzgerald and Brooks also teamed up for an 8-0 win for Fort Mill in No. 1 doubles.

Nation Ford’s schedule won’t get any easier this season as the team faces Rock Hill and Northwestern this week. The Falcons will also take on Fort Mill one more time and will play a non-region match against Charlotte Catholic late in the season.
