Yellow Jackets win inaugural tourney

If the first week of girls’ basketball was any indication, the Fort Mill Yellow Jackets are going to be in for a nice ride this season.

Fort Mill won its inaugural Yellow Jackets Pre-Season Tournament going 3-0 over three days. The Jackets opened the tournament with a resounding 70-24 win over York Prep Academy and then came back with a closer 43-39 win over Boiling Springs before wrapping things up with a 48-23 win over Buford.

Against York Prep, Fort Mill was led by sophomore Amiah Lindsay, who scored 19 points and had nine rebounds, while senior Meredith Christopher added 14 points and freshman Unique Burch dropped in 13 points to go along with five rebounds and five steals.

Head coach Brett Childers said the win was a meaningful one to start the season and boost his team’s confidence right out of the gate.

“With a lot of young people stepping up, it was an exciting win,” he said. “Unique has a bright future ahead of her. She sees the game on another level.”

In the closer win over Boiling Springs, the Jackets held strong despite the tougher competition. Lindsay had 17 points and 13 rebounds for her first double-double of the season. Christopher added 12 points.

Against Buford, Fort Mill again won handily, 48-23, as the Jackets had three players score in double figures. Lindsay led the team with another double-double – 15 points and 11 rebounds. Christopher added 11 points and Burch had 10. Christopher was named to the All-Tournament team and Lindsay was named tournament MVP.

Up next for Fort Mill are South Pointe and York, both home games this week for the Jackets at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday and Friday.
