The Fort Mill American Legion Post 43 team opened the season outscoring Clover and Lancaster by a combined 26-12.

Post 43 beat Lancaster Post 31 16-6 and Clover Post 38 10-6 last week.

Against Lancaster, Fort Mill had 14 hits, including four home runs. Second baseman Brandon Fite went 4-6 in the lead-off position. Shortstop Clay Hunt went 1-6 with a home run and three RBI, and first baseman Mason Jordan went 1-6 with a two-run home run and two RBI.

Designated hitter Justin Tepper went 2-5 with a two-run home run and outfielder Jackson Massey went 2-4 with a home run as well.

On the mound, Charlotte Catholics’ Jonathan Koletic got the win going five innings. He allowed four runs on nine hits, but relied on the Post 43 offense to keep him afloat. He struck out three in the game. Braxton Bishop, Garrett Leonard, Wyatt Baechtold and Hunt all pitched an inning of relief for Post 43.

In its season opening game against Clover Post 38 Lighting, Post 43 scattered 12 hits during its 10-6 win.

Pitcher Clay Helvey got the start and went four strong innings allowing just two hits while striking out five without allowing a walk or a base runner past second.

Post 43 opened the game with seven hits during the first three innings and jumped to a 6-0 lead. Tepper went 2-5 in the game with a two-run home run and four RBI.

Jordan and Helvey each had two hits with Jordan driving in two runs.

Clover scored three runs in the fifth inning to cut Post 43’s lead in half, but Leonard went two and two-thirds innings without allowing a run to cool off Post 38’s offense. Leonard struck out four in relief.

In the eighth inning, Fort Mill added three more runs on three hits and some aggressive base running to set up RBI opportunities. Pitcher Josh Jones, who pitched the last two innings, started the inning with a single and was later driven in on a single from Jordan. Justin Borland, who also singled earlier in the inning, scored, as did Fite.

In the final two frames, Jonesstruck out four while allowing two hits. Clover scored two runs, but only one was earned as Post 43’s defense struggled late in the game. Fort Mill made two of its three errors in the eighth inning.

Post 43 has one game scheduled this week, a short road trip to Rock Hill to take on Post 34 for the first time this season.
