Baxter takes swimming title in inaugural year with new league
So much for opening jitters.
The Baxter Barracudas won the Greater Charlotte Swim League Division III title in its first season in the league, finishing undefeated after winning both the regular season crown and All-Star meet.
Head coach Christine Johnson said she is surprised her team did as well as it did in switching from the Metrolina Swim League to a bigger league.
“I’m very surprised we were able to not get intimidated and swim as strong as we have,” she said.
Baxter accumulated 1,515 points, besting second place Mountainbrook by 100 points to win the All-Star meet. The Barracudas won seven of the 20 relay events. Relay winners for Baxter were:
▪ Boys’ 11-12 200-yard medley relay – Jack Stajos, Matthew Arnette, Quinn Jameson and Drew Fey
▪ Girls’ 13-14 200-yard medley relay – Shelby Anderson, Madison Arnette, Sophia Stansbery and Skylar Hollandsworth
▪ Boys’ 13-14 200-yard medley relay – Will Fey, Ian Mobbs, Ben Fenwick and Davis Rodriguez
▪ Girls’ 8 and under 100-yard freestyle relay – Kate Stajos, Sydney Musgrave, Reese Channell and Lauren Hardy
▪ Boys’ 9-10 100-yard freestyle relay – James Westerburg, Max Reichert, Sam Rimmer and Owen Fey
▪ Boys’ 13-14 200-yard freestyle relay (setting a new league record time in 1:44.33 surpassing the old record by 0.10) – Davis Rodriguez, Ian Mobbs, Xander Elhamahmy and Ben Fenwick
▪ Boys’ 15-18 200-yard freestyle relay – Adam Springs, Scott Bowman, Alex Fenwick and Harrison Mobbs
Baxter also had four individual winners at the meet with Ben Fenwick winning three events on his own. Fenwick set a league record in the 100-yard individual medley winning in 56.14 – beating the previous record by 2.68 seconds. Those individual winners at the All-Star meet were:
▪ Ben Fenwick – boys’ 13-14 100-yard individual medley, 50-yard breaststroke and 50-yard butterfly
▪ Kate Stajos – girls’ 8 and under 25-yard butterfly
▪ Emily Rimmer – girls’ 8 and under 25-yard breaststroke
▪ Drew Fey – boys’ 11-12 50-yard freestyle
