Sports briefs: Boosters offer chance to win $1,000

Buy a golf ball, chance to win $1,000

The Fort Mill High School Athletic Booster Club will host its first Golf Ball Drop just before kick off at the Sept. 18 varsity football game. Money raised will go toward scoreboards and field improvements around campus.

For $20 a ball, participants will have the chance to win up to $1,000 by being closest to the pin. Numbered balls will be dropped from a ladder firetruck onto the football practice field. The ball that ends up closest to a prize spot wins. Cash prizes will be $1,000 for closest to the pin, $500 for second closest, $250 for third and for $20 farthest. Other prizes and gift cards from restaurants and stores in the local area will be given as prizes.

Ball tickets can be purchased at FMHS events, from student athletes or at fortmillathletics.com/athleticboosters.

Hole-in-one for

Chuck Bagley made a hole in one Sept. 1 on hole 17 at Fort Mill Golf Club. He used a 6 hybrid for the 134 yard shot. It was his first hole in one and was witnessed by Don Garrett and Wayland Helms.

Falcons volleyball beats Gaffney

Despite being pushed to five sets, the Nation Ford Falcons volleyball team beat Gaffney 3-2 (25-23, 17-25, 22-25, 25-20, 15-7) to improve to 9-0 on the season. Kelli Martin had 16 kills and 13 digs. Clarissa Bates had 43 assist and 14 digs. Jessica Kemp has 13 kills and 10 blocks and Chanel Turner had 10 kills and 11 digs.

Fort Mill sweeps Trojans, Clover

The Fort Mill High volleyball team swept Northwestern winning 3-0 (25-15, 25-19, 25-23). Tessa Grubbs had 20 kills, Payton Carter had 15 kills and Brooke Farley had 38 assist. The Lady Jackets also beat Clover 3-0 (25-7, 25-11, 26-24). Grubbs and Carter had 15 kills each. Farley had 35 assist and Brynn Bonner had 14 digs.

Nation Ford golfers beat York, fall to Gaffney

The Nation Ford girls gold team defeated York but fell to Gaffney in a three-way match last week at Springfield Golf Club. Nation Ford shot a 209, while Gaffney shot a 199 and York shot a 215. Nation Ford was led by Zoe Bowers, who shot a 46. Her scores were followed by scores of 54 by Faith Portello and Cameron Levosky and a 55 from Logan James.

Fort Mill swim team sweeps Gaffney, Rock Hill

The Fort Mill swim team easily defeated Rock Hill and Gaffney.

The boys’ beat Rock Hill 140-11 and the girls’ won 132-26. The boys’ team beat Gaffney 140-16 and the girls’ won 131-38. Winning for Fort Mill in the three way meet were Erynn Black-200-yard freestyle and 500-yard freestyle, Andrew Scales-200-yard freestyle and 100-yard backstroke, Ben Fenwick-200-yard individual medley and 100-yard butterfly, Julia Herron- 200-yard individual medley, Kasparas Zilinskas-50-yard freestyle, Harrison Mobbs-100-yard freestyle, Owen Corkery-500-yard freestyle, Lauren Seco-100-yard backstroke and Alex Fenwick-100-yard breaststroke.

5K run/walk signup underway

Registration is open for the fourth annual Indian Land Fall Festival 5K Run/Walk. The race begins at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 18, at the City of Light, 3000 World Reach Drive, Indian Land. The event is open to all – from first-timers to experienced runners. Entry fees are $25 for the 5K and $15 for the one-mile fun run/walk.

Proceeds go to Alzheimer’s research. Those who preregister will receive race T-shirts. To register for the 5k or fun run/walk or for details, go to indianlandfallfestival.com or call Adam Cooper at 704-807-3562.
