Warriors finish 4th at S.C. cross-country meet

The Indian Land boys’ and girls’ cross-country teams finished in the top 10 at the 2A S.C. cross-country championships Saturday, while Nation Ford’s teams finished in the top 20.

The Indian Land girls finished fourth and were led by seventh-grader Lauren Sizemore, who finished third overall at 20:08.

Five runners from the Warriors’ girls’ team finished in the top 50.

Eighth-grader Kaitlyn Rodman finished 16th overall for Indian Land in a time of 21:15. She was followed by freshman Baileigh Sizemore at 21:36 at 26th and Braeden Rushing, another eighth-grader, in 27th at 21:37.

Rounding out the scoring for Indian Land was sophomore Morgan Engstrom in 49th at 22:36.

In the boys’ 2A race, Indian Land finished ninth as a team and was led by junior Austin St. John, who finished ninth overall in a time of 17:12.

Sophomore Previs Suvillaga finished 38th in 18:21 and senior Coleman Theodore finished 59th in 18:52 for Indian Land.

Finishing the scoring for Indian Land was Finn Hagerty and Connor Leyland, both sophomores, who finished 98th and 99th respectively at 19:56 and 19:58.

Nation Ford’s boys’ team finished 18th and was led by sophomore Malcolm McClain, who finished 37th in 16:59. He was followed by senior Cleve Fisher at 17:37 in 81st and then seniors Tim Tom and Jacob Siebert at 108 and 109 in 18:02 and 18:04.

Topping off the scoring for Nation Ford was eighth-grader Anthony Frattaroli, who finished 115th in 18:09.

In the girls’ 4A race, Nation Ford’s Marlena Schwinhorst was named an All-State runner with her 10th place finish in 19:29 to lead all local female runners. The Nation Ford girls finished 13th as a team.

First-year Nation Ford head coach Jason Byrne said he was proud of his girls’ performance.

“They took care of business,” Byrne said. “All year, we set some pretty lofty goals. As a whole, they put up some pretty big goals.”

Other Falcons runners scoring points for the girls’ team were seventh-grader Katie Pou, finishing 45th in 20:32 and junior Anna Hardymon, who finished 83rd in 21:27. Freshman Addy Rogers finished 86th in 21:35 and freshman Cate Tedford finished 118th in 22:20.

The Fort Mill girls’ team finished 19th and was led by eighth-grader Abigail Dawson, who finished 75th in 21:14. the Yellow Jackets lost their top three female runners to injuries in the two weeks between the Region III meet and the state meet Saturday.

Dawson was followed by seventh-grader Sydney George at 22:08 in 108th place and junior Meagan Allen at 22:19 in 117th. Juniors Halle Lewinski and Mia Davis rounded out the scoring for Fort Mill at 119th and 121st.

Jackets head coach Kyle Pearson is looking forward to next season, when his entire roster of girls returns.

“It was a really good season,” he said. “The girls overcame many injuries. We will be even better than this next year.”
