Struggling to find its rhythm, the Fort Mill High School girls’ basketball team fell to 1-3 after losing to South Pointe and Westwood last week.

Against Westwood, Fort Mill fell 51-28 and only scored 12 second half points, including just two in the fourth period. Fort Mill’s girls’ team fell earlier in the week to South Pointe 46-31.

“Our transition defense was poor,” said Fort Mill head girls’ basketball coach Brett Childers, about the lost to South Pointe.

“They (South Pointe) did a nice job. We didn’t get a chance to make adjustments,” he said.

Against South Pointe, Fort Mill was led by freshman Amiah Lindsay, who scored 10 points. The Jackets struggled shooting from the field and hit just 10 shots the entire game. They stayed close with South Pointe in the first half and was down by just six at halftime, but again struggled in the third and fourth quarters, hitting just five shots combined.

Boys on a roll

The Fort Mill boys’ team beat both South Pointe 60-50 and Westwood 39-37 in a physical game to improve to 6-1.

Against South Pointe, Fort Mill was led by Kawan Walker, who scored 19 points and Brandon Joseph, who added 10.

The second match between the two schools finished with the same results, a Fort Mill win, but it was a lot closer this time around.

“We dealt them a lopsided win the first time around,” said Fort Mill head coach Dwayne Hartsoe. “We knew it would be tougher this time.”

Fort Mill used a big, 20-8 second quarter to pull away as Walker scored 13 of his 19 in the period.

The Jackets stayed aggressive in the second half despite a furious rally from South Pointe in the fourth quarter. The Stallions opened the fourth quarter on a 5-2 run and cut the lead to 10 with about 5:30 left in the game at 49-29.

Fort Mill kept its composure and was aided by shooting 70 percent from the foul line in the final quarter to outlast South Pointe.

Coming up this week, Fort Mill opens Region III play against Northwestern at home before traveling to York on Thursday.
